Originally Kilchurn Castle was a simple five-story towerhouse with a protective wall around a courtyard. While today the dropped water level of Loch Awe makes it a peninsula, back in the 1400s this was an island castle, possibly reached by a causeway. Overview 2023 Update - Kilchurn Castle can be viewed from outside, but access to the interior is not allowed at the time of writing due to conservation work (3 August 2023) Kilchurn Castle stands on a peninsula at the eastern end of Loch Awe and is clearly visiible from the northern end of the A819 as it approaches the A85.
