I am trying to get the latest update, 4.3 I think it was, so I can install the homebrew channel
Looking at Nintendo's troubleshooting page, it sounds like the network error is a timeout, because most of their suggestions for fixes are attempts to speed up the Wii's network access. But if updates are failing directly from the disc, I don't think an online update would succeed anyhow.

You can't do it right now because the update servers are down, but when they come back up, you can update normally.
